If you go to http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml (like you were going to make a post), and click on the text that says "Switch to new version", it should show you the version they're planning on…

Which Linux to use?
OpenSuse is good, also try Arch and Gentoo. For something basic you could try the roots like Debian and Fedora. For something different a cool distro called Fuduntu combines Fedora and Ubuntu styles.
